How to Teach Your Alaskan Klee Kai to Settle Down and Relax

Alaskan Klee Kai are intelligent and energetic dogs, but learning how to settle and relax is just as important as learning how to sit, stay, or come.

What Does "Settle" Mean?

Settling means your dog can relax in a particular environment without constantly demanding interaction or searching for stimulation.

A settled dog might:

• Relax beside you
• Chew quietly
• Watch what's happening without reacting
• Take a nap
• Remain calm while you work

The goal isn't to make your Klee Kai inactive.

It's to help them learn when it's time to go and when it's time to rest.

Watch for Overstimulation

Sometimes what looks like "too much energy" is actually overstimulation.

Signs can include:

• Frantic behavior
• Excessive jumping
• Difficulty focusing
• Increased vocalization
• Nipping
• Constant pacing
• Inability to settle

If your dog is overstimulated, adding even more excitement may not help.

Sometimes they need a calm environment and an opportunity to decompress.

Create a Predictable Routine

A predictable daily rhythm can help your dog understand when activity happens and when rest happens.

For example:

Morning: Walk + training
Midday: Enrichment + quiet time
Afternoon: Play + training
Evening: Walk + relaxation

The exact schedule will depend on your household and your dog's individual needs.

The important part is teaching your Klee Kai that life isn't always exciting.

Don't Reward Demand Barking With Attention

If your Klee Kai barks, paws at you, or repeatedly demands attention, immediately giving them attention may accidentally reinforce that behavior.

Instead, whenever appropriate and safe, wait for a moment of calm and then reward that calm behavior.

You want your dog to learn:
